Our graduates are equipped not only with knowledge but also the vital skills and understanding that will help them address real-world problems. Because an engineer must combine technical capacities and knowledge with professional managerial and people skills, recent changes in our curriculum have been introduced to better develop in our students the following qualities:
Our four year program covers both the fundamental knowledge systems of engineering - beginning with mathematics and physics and engineering mechanics and materials - and also the various complex uses and applications of such knowledge. Design is a critical aspect of most engineering practice and the Faculty wide first year course Engineering Design and Innovation takes students into the collaborative engineering process from the very start, providing our students with immediate exposure to the core issues of engineering. Second and third year courses introduce students to further learning in a wide variety of areas such as engineering construction, engineering computations, sustainable transport and highway engineering, applied geotechnics, structural analysis, and design, water treatment and water resources engineering. The third year Civil Engineering Practice course seeks to integrate the material learnt in the various sub-disciplines of civil engineering. Multi-disciplinary projects are undertaken and involve the identification of major issues and the development of solutions for open-ended problems including considerations of the environmental, economic and social impacts of the proposed solutions. The objective is to further develop students' research, teamwork, managerial and self-directed learning skills. In their final fourth year students may choose to study electives in the areas of engineering construction and management, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transport engineering, and/or water engineering. HonoursThe Honours Thesis in Fourth year is an individual project in which each student works under the guidance of a nominated member of the academic staff (supervisor). It is your chance to follow your passions, explore further, and contribute some original ideas and research in your field. The thesis may involve laboratory experiments, field or industry based investigations, design applications or theoretical research. You will need to produce a self-contained technical report, which may be understood and used by others with a technical background knowledge in the same discipline area as the thesis topic, and present the work in a seminar.
Industrial ExperienceThe School has many links with industry, and industrial experience is an integral part of the undergraduate program. This can be taken within Australia or overseas. Students must complete at least 60 days of approved industrial experience. Entry requirements:Admission to degrees is based on demand.
