Applicants are sought for a PhD scholarship in the area of examination of factors controlling the growth, toxicity and succession of cyanobacteria in drinking water supply reservoirs. This project is supported by the Australian Research Council with industry support from the Sydney Catchment Authority and Water Quality Research Australia (WQRA).
The successful candidate will possess excellent laboratory skills, a strong knowledge of physical chemistry and the ability to undertake genetic analyses. The successful candidate will be based in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of New South Wales in Sydney though will also interact with colleagues in the UNSW School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences.
A tax-free stipend of $25,000 per annum will be provided through the ARC project with a $5,000 per annum “top up” provided by WQRA. While the ARC support is available to any applicant, only students with Australian Citizenship, New Zealand Citizenship or Permanent Residency are eligible for the WQRA top-up. Commencement in Semester 2, 2009 is desirable though consideration will be given to a Semester 1, 2010 start.
