On the 9th of November, CIES will host the CIA’s (Concrete Institute of Australia’s) Sydney seminar AS3600 – 2009, on the long-awaited new edition of the Australian Standard for Concrete Structures.

The Sydney meeting is part of a “national tour” which is being organised by the CIA to brief its members on this important revision to the Australian Standard.

Key presenters at these seminars will be CIES’ Professors Ian Gilbert and Stephen Foster, who have intimate knowledge and direct involvement in making key changes to the revised AS3600.

Ian Gilbert is one of only 3 academics elected to the Council of the CIA, a leading organisation whose mission is to promote and develop excellence in concrete technology, application, design and construction throughout Australia.

The revised AS 3600 will provide users with nationally acceptable unified rules for the design and detailing of concrete structures and elements, with or without steel reinforcement or prestressing tendons. The major reason for the revision of AS 3600 was to include design rules for advances in concrete design, including the use of high strength concrete as well as a restructure of the design procedures section to align the Standards to the new editions of AS/NZS 1170 Structural Design Actions.  Both Ian Gilbert and Stephen Foster were instrumental in preparing this revision.

The seminar program seeks to highlight the changes to the Standard and how these developments will impact current practice. Numerous worked examples will be presented to illustrate how to implement and take advantage of the new provisions in the Standard.

The series of national seminars is also supported by Engineers Australia and CCAA (Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia)
