Excellent Employment Prospects

In recent years there has been large employment growth for engineers in the private sector.  In general, employment prospects are excellent, salaries are high, and moreover, there is a current shortage of engineers.

Where do environmental engineers work?

Most environmental engineers work in an office environment where they investigate, plan, design and manage projects; others manage and supervise construction projects on site. Many projects involve both office and field work.

Environmental engineers usually work in urbanized areas, but their skills are also required in rural, remote and isolated areas, in Australia and around the world.

It has great diversity and a broad range of exciting and rewarding career opportunities are available to graduates, including employment with:

  • Specialist consulting firms (which vary in size from sole practitioners to major firms employing hundreds of engineers)
  • Large public companies.
  • Federal, state and local government organisations - which construct, manage and maintain public utilities.
  • Airport and harbour authorities.
  • Project developers.
  • Financial and management consultants; and many more.

How much does an environmental engineer earn?

On average, a starting salary for a UNSW environmental engineering graduate is about $50,000, rising to $80,000 to $100,000 or more with experience.

More than any other degree, engineering leads to the most diverse range of career paths. An engineering education will benefit you for life. Engineers learn problem solving, management skills, lateral thinking, teamwork, communications and negotiation – it’s a profession that is never boring because its essence is confronting problems and finding solutions to them.

Because of their skills and their inventiveness, environmental engineers often progress to senior management positions. Once you have the skills of a professional, qualified environmental engineer, you can go in any direction you choose.
