What is Civil Engineering with Architecture

| BE Civil with Arch | What is Civil with Arch | Program Structure | Career Opportunities | Student Profile |

Civil engineering involves the planning, design, construction and management of the national infrastructure, that is, the basic structure of the world we live in.  It is a very broad profession with many career opportunities. Civil engineers design, construct, manage and maintain the infrastructure that supports modern society including buildings, bridges, roads, airfields, ports, railways and water systems.

Engineering is not just applied science. Where science is analytic in that it strives to understand what is, engineering is synthetic in that it strives to create. Engineering is creativity constrained by nature, cost, concerns of safety, environmental impact, ergonomics, reliability and other factors. Since the constructions of the pyramids, civil engineers have advanced civilisation and enhanced the quality of life. The engineers of tomorrow need the skills of their predecessors as well as many more, and in broader areas. And in the course of their careers, many civil engineers will need to work closely with architects.

The BE Civil Engineering with Architecture Program seeks to promote synchronization, mutual esteem between engineers and architects, and an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to training of future civil engineers. Through the course the students will develop and nurture creativity and impart the technical and scientific principles required to design structures.

The ultimate aim is to help students become conceptual thinkers, inspired by beautiful creations to build even better ones, to develop an appreciation for beauty with the mathematical ability to challenge the traditional boundaries of structural design.

Creativity and inventiveness are the key attributes of this program.

Civil engineers have an aptitude for engineering science, mathematics and physics, while also being able to creatively solve open ended problems using systematic thinking and individual flair.

Most civil engineers become managers during their careers, and civil engineers occupy top management positions in many private and public organisations. Therefore working successfully in teams and managing people are also important attributes of civil engineers.

Civil engineering is an exciting and rewarding profession offering opportunities to take a leading role in projects that enhance the overall quality of life. The Civil with Architecture program seeks to address many of the aspects of how a modern engineer should be educated. The program endeavours to close the gap between what is taught in school and what is expected from young engineers by their employers and clients.

Students graduating from this degree will be well qualified to collaborate with architects and other professionals in the built environment to produce integrated, sustainable design.
