Industrial Training

1. General

For accreditation of an engineering degree by Engineers Australia, students are required to complete a minimum of sixty working days of approved Industrial Training to be scheduled for assessment prior to the award of a Bachelor of Engineering degree. Industrial Training must be concurrent with enrolment and normally should be accumulated in two lots of six weeks in the summer recesses at the end of the second and third years in your program.

A minimum of forty working days of approved Industrial Training must be completed and verified prior to registration in Industrial Training Component.

Students are expected to submit a report on this training by Week 4 in Semester 1 of year 4 and to present a seminar during Week 10, outlining their Industrial Training experience.

Students should note that Industrial Training is an essential component in the development of the practical and professional skills required of an Engineer and an aid to prospective employment. Many employers regard this period as a chance to vet new employees for future employment. All students should make considerable effort and give sufficient thought into obtaining the most relevant and effective Industrial Training. Whilst difficult, it is desirable to obtain experience in a range of activities including design office, laboratory and on-site situations. Labouring or trade work may be approved for a short period in some circumstances, as the degree of technical work could be limited by students' advancement in the program. It is in the students' interest to extend their training over as long a period as possible and to regard training at the end of both years 2 and 3 as an essential goal. It is important that the student makes the most of his/her Industrial Training by soliciting varied and challenging projects from their employer. It should also be noted that learning general workplace and interpersonal skills are important objectives of the Industrial Training experience.
