3. Obtaining Industrial Training

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH STUDENT TO OBTAIN HIS/HER OWN INDUSTRIAL TRAINING EMPLOYMENT.

If you have any doubts or questions about a proposed employment, you should consult the School Coordinator of Industrial Training. You may also consult academic staff on the availability of industrial training. Watch the School employment notice boards which are located in the foyer (ground floor) and on the 7th. floor for occasional offers and supplementary announcements. At the request of prospective employers, announcements may be placed at Industrial Training Opportunities Notice page.

The Student Industry Liaison Unit (SILU) has been established by the Faculty of Engineering to facilitate the procedure for gaining and completing suitable work experience for all engineering students. Students who wish to pursue their Industrial Training interstate, or overseas are strongly encouraged to do so, provided they have sufficient information regarding the proposed nature of the work. In the current global climate, this option is becoming increasingly attractive and should be considered by all students. You can always communicate with the School Office using the normal e-mail or fax while you are employed overseas. Overseas experience is often viewed favourably by employers when seeking permanent full time appointment.

In some circumstances (such as students from overseas) it is possible to return to their home countries at the end of their degree program to complete their Industrial Training. Assessment can be made on receipt of their report.

Your attempts to obtain industrial experience are part of the training in this subject; use your initiative and document how you have gained each employment in your report.

Effective ways of obtaining Industrial Training include written application, applying in person, or by following up personal contacts. Be persistent! If you are unsure about resume or application letter writing consult SILU staff or the Student Careers and Employment.

Students should expect to be paid for their work at a rate comparable to their qualification and experience. As a general guide, the rate of pay may be related to the remuneration of a graduate engineer on a sliding scale as follows:
Year 4 prior to graduation 80 - 100%
End of year 3 60 - 80 %
End of year 2 40 - 60 %

There is no specific award for work experience, however some employers, such as Local Government, may suggest a sub-professional award, based on the type of work involved and union membership. Employers normally provide insurance cover to their employees for the duration of industrial training. In some circumstances, such as unpaid employment for example, employers may require a letter of indemnity from the University in respect to possible damage by the students to employers property or personnel during their placement. Indemnity letters are available from the School office. You should also consult with the Student Guild for other insurance covers provided by the Student Union.
