Learning Methods
External students use the following learning methods: A coursework package for each course is provided to each student at the beginning of each session. The coursework package usually consists of: - A set of 10-12 guided learning modules (units). Each module or unit covers a topic that would normally be covered in a three hour lecture session for internal students. Students are provided with key concepts, are referred to particular readings, and are expected to complete exercises in a structured manner.
- A set of readings, consisting of notes prepared specifically for the course and extracts from texts and academic papers.
- Contact with the course coordinator is usually by email. Most courses also have an online My eLearning Vista component.
- The UNSW Library offers a number of services to external students enrolled at UNSW including posting out of requested books, photocopying journal articles and CD-ROM database searches. The Library catalogue can be consulted via the internet, or via telephone and modem. As a UNSW student, you may also apply for access to other university libraries.
- For some courses, attendance at a Campus Study Period is compulsory.
Typically, assessment in an external postgraduate course will involve two to three assignments and one exam, which is sat off-campus.
