Computing Facilities

The School has a range of different computer systems to cater for different application and software requirements. Almost all of these computers are connected, to allow files, programs and printers to be shared between them. Most user files are stored on a central file server (drive X:). The network that connects these computers is also connected to the Internet to permit activities such as e-mail, and information retrieval.

What we provide you

There are 3 main computer labs within the School Building;

  • Lab 201: Undergraduate teaching (primarily Stage 1 and 2)
  • Lab 611: Undergraduate teaching (primarily Stage 3 and above)
  • Lab 601D: ***Closed***

The labs are equipped with PCs running Windows, some PCs in Lab 611 have CD burners for backing-up your files. To access the labs, you need a valid ID card. To use a workstation, you need a user account.

Your Account and Quotas

School computer accounts are normally set up automatically for all registered students and should be usable by the beginning of the session. The login name is a lower-case "z" followed by your student number. Previous student accounts will normally be reactivated when the student has re-enrolled.

Your initial passwords will be allocated to you and you will be required to change your password at your first log-on session. Make a careful note of your password and keep any written forms safe (eg. encrypted) at all times. At anytime in the future, if you wish to change your password then press "control-alt-delete" and select "Change Password". If you forget your password, it will need to be reset by computing staff.

Quotas are applied to student accounts for printing, disc space and Internet. The 2009 quotas are given below.

*Print quota will be reset every semester. Any remaining credit will be forfeited at the beginning of the next semester.

Stage is defined by the Units of Credit (UOC) passed in the program as indicated in the UNSW Student Record System (NSS). Accounts are automatically created based on NSS data. In some special cases, we may adjust your Stage or create your New account contrastingly to NSS data. Please use the form below for those requests.

Purchasing additional Internet and Print Quota

When a student has exceeded the initial printer or Internet limit allocation, additional quota may be purchased.

Complete an "Internet and Print Quota Purchase Form" (can be downloaded below) and submit it with your payment to the School Office (level 4). A valid receipt must be shown to the laboratory supervisor on duty so that the increase can be processed.

Internet and Print Quota Purchase Form

In 2009, additional printing quota cost is 10c/A4 one side page (GST inclusive); additional internet quota is $10/200 Mb (GST inclusive). You may only purchase additional quota in multiples of $10. The School reserves the right to change or alter quota prices at any time. Unused credits will NOT be refunded, and there will be no carry over of credits from one year to the next.

Purchase forms for Internet and Print Quotas normally take one day to be processed. They are updated overnight and should be available the next day after payment has been processed.

If you are currently logged-on to the system in one of our computer labs, your personal Internet and disk quota can be checked at CVEN Quota System Page (this web page includes instructions on how to check your print quota).

Internet Access by Research Students

All research students can access the internet from any of our 3 laboratories or from the Research Management Committee (RMC) supported PCs located in their rooms.

Research Lab 601D is open 7 days / 24 hours for research student use. All 10 PCs in that lab are also connected directly to a high speed, high volume Kyocera laser Printer.

Email lists help communication between groups members via email and the Internet. We provide a Web interface to the Civil and Environmental Engineering Email List Server for groups members to view archived mails and subscribe to groups of your interests. Groups members are students enrolled in CVEN courses. Lists are updated every 1-2 weeks.

Something you need to know before using these Facilities

All students in the School are provided with computer user accounts.

By logging on the School’s Computer System the student acknowledges acceptance of the terms and conditions listed in the School’s Computer Code of Conduct. For further details see the Acceptable Use of UNSW ICT Resources Policy and Procedures. You must read and be familiar with these rules to use computers in the School.

Every student has to go through a signing-on process provided by the Communications Unit of the Division of Information Services (see www.services.comms.unsw.edu.au) to access campus wide facilities. Once the "Agree to the Rules" process is complete, the student will have access to their official UNSW e-mail account and to other UNSW Online Services such as Uniwide, MyUNSW and My eLearning Vista.
