Q: Why does my browser freeze when I start using VISTA?

A: Although Internet Explorer 5.5 (SP2), 6.0 (Windows) are recommended browsers, they sometimes lead you to the unknown freezing action. This error is a result of the following combination: IE, Java 1.5_06, Win 2000 and Vista. The best browser for VISTA is Firefox 1.0 (Windows and Mac OS X). We do have Firefox installed in all School’s laboratory computers. Look for Mozilla Firefix icon (see on the right).
For more information about browser freezes, read "Student Known Issues and Solutions" page on the University’s VISTA Support web site here.

Q: Why does my Internet connection off-campus is so slow when accessing VISTA?
Q: I can't connect from off-campus.

A: There are many reasons why your connection is slow or you can’t connect off-campus. EdTEC provide some solution here.
There are some reports that VISTA has problems with some dial-up and satellite Internet connections. To overcome this problem, you may try using proxy server. More information is available here at http://www.freeproxy.com.

Access

Q: I can’t see all courses I enrolled when I log on to VISTA, what do I do?

A: Nothing! Not all courses have VISTA feature. If you believe the course has VISTA feature, but you can’t see from the list, contact your course lecturer.

Q: I can see my course in the list after logging on to VISTA, however, I was denied access when I try to enter some VISTA courses, why?
A: Usually it is something to do with your enrolment; the following reason may cause your denied access.

  • Late enrolment and changes of enrolment can affect your access. It can take up to a few days after enrolment for you to get access to VISTA course.
  • You must sign in University of New South Wales Conditions of Use agreement prior to use VISTA. Generally this happens with new students. Go to https://wombos.unsw.edu.au/agreement/index.shtml to sign.
  • Outstanding library or other fees may affect your access.
  • Other enrolment issue such as academic probation may also affect your access.

Q: What do I do to correct my access problems?
A: Contact IT Service Desk (see above). They can check your enrolment record and can grant you access if there is an error in you record. Your lecturer can also check your access, he/she, however, can not grant you access.

Q: I have trouble opening documents in VISTA, who can help me?
A: Your course designer can help you. It is usually your course lecturer that taking course designer roll. Let him/her know (be very specific – note down or print screen the error message) your problem. He/she may correct the problem document or refer to you information on where you can get further help.

Q: Why do I still see VISTA courses that I have already discontinued? Does that mean I am still enrolled?
A: No. VISTA’s default setting to deal with students that are no longer enrolled in the course is to deny their access. Unless, the setting has been changed, you may still see the course listed when logging on to VISTA. However, you should not be able to access them. Again, depends on your course designer, he/she may have chosen to leave students alone. This means you can access the course even thought you have discontinued the enrolment.

More information

Q: The above information does not help me, where do I find more information on troubleshooting?

A: UNSW VISTA student support web site.
The FAQs page also gives you links to other university’s FAQs pages as well. However, keep in mind that if VISTA has been customised to each university’s settings and needs so the solution may be different from one university to another.
You can also contact IT Service Desk. Although they are trained to help you, they can not solve every problem. Be very specific and write down any error messages or record your actions leading to the errors will help them to identify or further investigate your problem.
