UNSW Occupational Health and Safety Policy

Policies

The School of Civil & Environmental Engineering aim is to facilitate a safe, healthy and secure learning and working environment for all students, staff, contractors and visitors.

The School recognises its obligations under the NSW Occupational Health and Safety Act 2000 and related legislation.

The School is committed to providing the highest standard of Occupational Health and Safety [OHS]. This will be achieved through the establishment of a School Workplace Safety Committee to assist management in the development of a safe working environment with safe working practices.

Occupational Health and Safety is a shared responsibility and everyone attending the School must ensure that their actions or omissions do not affect the health and safety of others.

The Council of the UNSW has ultimate responsibility for the provision of a safe and healthy learning and working environment and for ensuring the allocation of adequate resources to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2000 and all relevant legislation, Codes of Practice, Australian Standards and the requirements of regulatory bodies.

Managers are responsible for:

  • the provision of a safe and healthy work and study environment;
  • ensuring safe systems of work are established, supervised and reviewed
  • establishing a program to manage their OH&S risks.

Supervisors are responsible for:

  • providing information, training and supervision to their staff and students on:
    1. the potential health and safety risks associated with their tasks;
    2. their responsibilities to follow safe work practices
  • reporting and investigate all accidents
  • taking all reasonable steps to rectify identified hazards.

Employees and Students are responsible for:

  • cooperating with the School's OHS policies and procedures;
  • their supervisor's instructions on safe work practices;
  • and reporting any hazards or accidents to their supervisor as soon as practical.

Contractors and Visitors must comply with UNSW OHS policies and procedures and the School's OHS policies and procedures. They must report any hazards or accidents to UNSW project management. Project managers must ensure that contractors have received a site safety induction and their work practices are documented and supervised.

The School will promulgate OHS policies and procedures that will be reviewed annually in relation to changing workplace circumstances and OHS legislation.
